Thoughts for Reflection from Benedictine & Monastic Authors

2013 August 12 - The Church as Spouse of Christ

The Church is the Spouse of Christ. She is our Mother: we ought to love her, because she leads us to Christ and unites us to Him. We ought to love and revere her teaching, because it is the teaching of Christ Jesus, ought to love her prayer and associate ourselves with it, because it is the very prayer of the Spouse of Christ. There is nothing surer for us than that, nothing more pleasing to Our Lord. We ought, in a word, to be attached to the Church, to everything that comes to use from her, as we would have been attached to the person of Jesus Himself and to everything that would have come to us from Him, had we been able to follow Him during His life on earth.
