Pillars of Community: Four Rules of Pre-Benedictine Monastic Life

Spiritual Beauty in the Rule of St. Augustine

[St Augustine‚Äôs Rule] ends with a prayer: “The Lord grant you the grace to observe these precepts with love, as lovers of spiritual beauty, exuding the fragrance of Christ in the goodness of your lives; you are no longer slaves under the law, but a people living in freedom under grace.”  The words that jump out at us in this final prayer are lovers of spiritual beauty.  Suddenly, at the end of a monastic Rule that has not been much concerned with contemplation or even prayer, the monks are addressed in this highly evocative, poetic fashion: lovers of spiritual beauty   Page 187
