Meeting Christ in His Mysteries

Liturgy as an Icon, a Window into Heaven

Liturgy is a complex human activity engaging the five senses in communal prayer.  It calms the mind, focuses attention, and lures the heart into contemplation.  In the Christian East and in Benedictine tradition, liturgical worship is seen as a type of vision.  By contemplating the solemn ritual we are meant to detect in the worship of the earthly church an icon of the liturgy of heaven.  Page 131
