Contemplation: the Goal of “Monastic Theology”

The goal of [the monastic theology idea] is the vision of the living God revealed in the face of Jesus Christ and disclosed to us in the light of the Holy Spirit.  It aims not just at theoretical or abstract knowledge but at the knowledge born of love as it emerges in spiritual experience.  In the early monastic tradition this was known as vision or contemplation and entailed lectio divina in the context of the regular celebration of the liturgy, the church’s public, communal prayer.  Page 8
