Thoughts for Reflection from Benedictine & Monastic Authors

Awakening to Human Weakness
“...we must take note of …Peter’s denial of Jesus. John recalls, with the Synoptics, that there were three denials and that it all ended with a cockcrow. The consistent emphasis on the cockcrow in all the Gospels elevates it, I think, to a symbolic level of meaning. In the days before alarm clocks, most people rose at dawn when the cocks began to crow. The cockcrow [in the Gospels] should be recognized, therefore as an ‘awakening’ of Peter to the reality of his human weakness.” pg 13
