Thoughts for Reflection from Benedictine & Monastic Authors

Loving Jesus in His Humility
“True love expresses itself in the monk’s desire to become poorer. This “poverty of spirit,” this love of poverty as an expression of the love of Christ, is what evangelical poverty is all about. It is the spirit expressed by St Benedict when he says, Whoever needs less should thank God and not be distressed, but whoever needs more should feel humble because of his weakness. (Rule of Saint Benedict 34, 3-4) If we really loved Jesus in His humility it would bring us to what is simple and humble. We would look for everything from our Father in heaven, whose chief interpreter for us in the abbot.” Page 146
