September 26th - Listening and Responding

Reading and psalmody both come before the prayer. This is the case with the liturgy in the oratory, and also the liturgy outside the oratory: during work, at the table, and everywhere else. ‘God has the first word’; ‘It was he who loved us first.’ Our prayer and our love cannot be anything more than a response or an answer. Listening, then, is the indispensable preparation for pure, silent prayer. (pages 78-79)
