The Spirit of Monastic Obedience

“The monk obeys in order to unite himself with Jesus, who, “emptied himself, taking the form of a slave.”Phil 2:7 The task commanded is secondary.  The monk does not obey in order that the project turn out well on the human level.  In [the monastic] life there is much less need to judge the order or request in regard to its practical prudence.  One obeys in order to serve and to enter this way into the plan of salvation.  Once united to this divine plan through total obedience, prayer will spring up spontaneously in spirit and in truth, and God will fulfill the human heart’s deepest desires.”  Page 179
