Lectio Lights from the Monastery

Reflections for the Day

Lights from Our Lectio:
The Gospel applied using the Prism of the Rule of St. Benedict

I am the light of the world (John 8:12).  The Gospel captures the light of Christ so that we might meet Him and see ourselves and our world through the light of His love and being.

St. Benedict applies the Gospel to daily living; through the prism of his Rule, separating the light of Christ into “various colors” as through a prism, allowing us to experience the light of Christ in various, pragmatic ways.

May you find the light of Christ further refracted through our prayer and lectio, enlightening your mind and warming for your heart.

Saturday, Seventh Week of Easter

You follow me.
(from John 21:20-25)

A short sentence, but a powerful one.  These words of Jesus to Peter are for us as well.  What is the only thing we need to do?  Follow Jesus.  He is the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6).

Peter was concerned about John, but Jesus simply points out, the only thing Peter needed to do was to follow me.  We’re a lot like Peter.  We’re concerned about what’s going on around us and we take our eyes off of Jesus.  We put our hand to the plow, but look back (cf. Luke 9:62).  Jesus charges us to keep our eyes on Him and use Him as our compass.  On our own, impossible.  But with the help of the Spirit, very do-able!
